I was introduced to my first “wilderness area” shortly after arriving in Wyoming more than a decade ago, and while recording a story segment for National Public Radio I stumbled, quite unintentionally, upon an empty elk camp. In the context of the National Forest Service edict, Leave No Trace, this marked territory - a secret, ritualistic place, hidden in plain sight - resonated with me. Other deep woods ephemera that, depending upon the slant of the light, appeared and disappeared, led me to an ongoing photographic examination of habitation and the migratory traces, both human and animal, left behind.
